TOP 9 COLOURING TIPS FOR YOUR BEST COLOUR RESULTS

COLOUR LIKE AN EXPERT

Hair colour is one of beauty’s most complicated sciences. Follow our Clairol Colour Expert’s Top 9 colouring tips to help you get your home haircolour just right.

1. FIND COLOUR FOR YOUR UNIQUE HAIR.

Know that haircolour is different for everyone. Just because you and your best friend use the same shade doesn’t mean you’ll have the same haircolour. colour develops a bit differently on every person, so consider hair condition, starting colour and how much processing has gone on.

2. USE THE SHADE GRID AS GUIDE

Don’t go by the model on the front of the colour pack to predict your colour result. Check out the shade starting colour/resulting colour grid on the back to see how your starting colour influences your end colour result.

3. YOUR SKIN TONE MATTERS

Choose a colour that suits your skin tone. If your skin is cool (fair, rosy skin with blue, green or grey eyes) go for ashy blondes and mahogany brunettes, and avoid warm or golden haircolours.

4. WHEN IN DOUBT, GO LIGHTER

It’s much easier to “fix” a lighter shade if you are not happy with the result. Most box colours turn out darker than what you think, so unless you’re certain, choose a shade that looks a bit lighter than you’d like the final result.

5. START WITH SMALL colour CHANGES

Don’t go for a dramatic change—stay within two to three shades of your current or natural haircolour. If your hair is dark and you want to be platinum blonde, leave it to the professionals.

6. KEEP YOUR GREYS TOP OF MIND

Remember that the more grey hair you have, the lighter your overall shade will appear. Be careful when choosing a colour. Start off with a tone one to two shades lighter than your natural haircolour, slowly re-introducing warmth and intensity back into your hair.

7. HAIR TYPE MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

Coarse hair (large in diameter) generally takes more time to absorb colour, so it requires a longer timing. Fine hair (small in diameter) generally takes less time to absorb colour so it requires a shorter timing.

8. COLOUR-TREATED HAIR PRODUCTS DO THE TRICK

Use hair care products specifically designed for coloured hair to help lock colour in. Also, try hair treatments that help keep your colour looking great in between colourings.

9. DO A STRAND TEST.

Since several factors—including hair texture, dryness or whether it’s permed or not—affect timing, a strand test will help you estimate the colouring time to ensure the colour you want.
